I just heard a librarian on Radio 4 citing their new self-service checkout system as an example of how they were raising their game in the face of the challenges of the modern world.

Somewhere in Rome, it's possible an educationalist was boasting of the high availability of fiddle lessons while smoke drifted in through their window...

I'm hoping that the BBC picked the most random sound-bite they could to go after their "what with the rise of audiobooks, the Kindle, and other digital threats..." introduction. Because the idea of self-service checkouts being the vanguard of the libraries' response made me laugh out loud in the kitchen, and that doesn't happen very often.

Oh, oh. *clutches head* Dear that librarian, I seriously hope your quote was taken out of context because otherwise, you're making my profession look stupid.

(note to self: boot up iplayer and listen to the 'listen again')

Did you "listen again"? I'm pretty sure I was paying a decent amount of attention at the time, and it just seemed like a very inappropriate response -- like the programme had asked one question before the interview recording, and the librarian had answered another...

Yeah, it was just. It was almost like someone had cut in a random file they had lying around "librarian says something vaguely technological.mp3" or something.

I have to keep thinking that, otherwise I might cry tears of blood. I'm a systems librarian, so it really hurts when my fellow librarians make us look stupid and involve tech at the same time.
