Random Observation

Behind my new desk at work is a room with a big industrial cheque printer in it. Every morning, it spends about half an hour making the same thudding noise as the signal from the aliens in Contact. I keep on looking around, expecting to see Jodie Foster.

One thing that film got right - if you ever do get a signal, every kook on the planet will beat a path to your door.

If you read the book 'Contact' (which I can recommend) Eleanor Arroway does spend time listening to random noise sources so in some strange and delightful way you are indeed mimicing fiction :)

Oh yes. I read the book about a decade before the film came out, I think -- I was definitely still at school...
