More picture usage: Today's entry on the oil pipeline explosion in Minnesota in Steve Levine's The Oil and the Glory blog features a photo of mine from the Bourton-on-the-Water motor museum.

Which is odd, because I'm truly not trying. It's not as if I thought at the time, "ooh, our oil's running out, and this old petrol pump is quite attractive and has a dial that's nearly on zero. Someone'll want that for an article..." I just saw an old petrol pump and took a photo. About the only foresightful thing I did in this case was to tag it with the leftpondian word for "petrol" on top of the British English taggage.

I can see why people might trip over my stuff when looking for Creative Commons things specific to Bristol, say, because there's probably not that many people taking pictures of St Mary Redcliffe and uploading them somewhere where they'd fall into a Creative Commons search. But there are absolutely tons of petrol-related Creative Commons pictures, even just on Flickr1, and that one doesn't come anywhere near the top of the list.

Oh well. It's nice, whatever the reason, and maybe it's a sign that my photos will sell when I get around to starting to sell them. In the meantime I'm happy enough with that warm fuzzy CC feeling of giving stuff away :)

Actually, Matt, your photo came up on the very first page when I searched for "gasoline pump". And it was the best one.

Ah, the joys of trackback/link search! Thank you for taking the time to let me know how you found the photo. I guess my one foresightful thing (tagging with "gasoline") was what paid off :)

You've obviously been hanging around with librarians for long enough to know how to use tags effectively!

Plus you're photos are really good, despite the fact most of them were taken with a dinky little camera.

PS Sorry - I do know the difference between 'you're' and 'your'. It is just that I started out writing 'you're a really good photgrapher' and the sentence changed partway through and I should have gone back and re-edited the second word.

Heh. I've met you, so it was perfectly obvious that that was a thinko/editing mishap rather than a lack of grammatical knowledge. Could you not edit the comment? I think LJ added the ability to edit your comments last month. I think you're okay if the comment's not been replied to yet, but I'm not sure what the other rules are...

Why thank you :) The dinky little camera helps as much as it hinders, really, because a lot of the time I wouldn't be bothered to carry a bighugepropercamera. Even after I upgrade (soon, hopefully) I think the little Minolta will be lurking in a pocket most of the time.

Congrats! Seems you've got a knack for both the picture and the picture tagging.
