So, like, is it normal for a new washing machine to smell quite strongly of burning plastic on its first few cycles? Or should I be starting to worry?

That's what I was about to say. Check the manual and look for them telling you to remove something or other from the bowels. Then call the people you bought it from and get them to look at it.

Well, I was a good boy and actually read the instructions (yeah, I know, unusual for me, but), including the bit that said to make sure that the huge bit of polystyrene that should have still been attached to the bottom bit of packing was still there, and everything.

The good news is that it's now doing its third load, and there's no smell at all, apart from that nice launderette fresh-tumbling-clothes smell. So, whether there was some errant polystyrene beads that have now finished evaporating on hot machinery, or whether it was something else entirely, it seems to be fine now. And it does its job well.

Although I'd forgotten that clothes have a tendency to shrink when tumble-dried. Some of my T-shirts are now a bit more fitted than they were yesterday. Hmm. Time to start that diet, I think.
