More photographic usage

More people are using my photos: This time, the Journal of Church Archaeology just sent me an email asking if they could use this photo for their next journal. I usually seem surprised by the pictures of mine people choose to use, and this is no exception; I much prefer this one of St Mary. It's almost impossible to get a shot of the Chruch without cars and street signs and overhead cables intruding.

Regardless, it's always nice to feel that some of my output is being put to some kind of purpose :)

I like it for the picture quality you get versus its size -- it means I can pretty much carry it everywhere with me, which I do, and get good pictures.

I do want to get a better camera, but it'll be an "as well" rather than an "instead of". I need something a lot more manually-controllable and with a better lens, at the very least, as while the DiMage is great for automatic shots, it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to manual focus or aperture control, and as I get better at photography, I'm head-butting its limits more and more often. But that would also be the kind of camera you couldn't easily shove in a pocket, or take along to a party without worrying about too much, so I'll be holding onto the DiMage!

I prefer your linked pic rather than the one in this entry, but I can see how it might not be to everyone's taste. They may prefer their churches sunny and bright instead of gothic and looming.

Pah. What kind of self-respecting Church Archaeologist wouldn't want their churches looking all gothic and looming? Besides, that's what St Mary Redcliffe is like; it's dark and it looms.

I really must get around to going and having a look around inside of it at some point. It's on my list of interesting things to go take photos of, but I'm not getting through that list very fast...

The main reason magazines like this kind of shot with lots of negative space is that there's plenty of room to put text on it.

Ah, yes, I hadn't thought of that. Incidentally, ta for the comments on Flickr; you've got me playing with perspective correction for the first time. Although probably the best you could say for my first attempt (http://www.flickr.com/photos/matt_gibson/2072615079/) is that it's not bad for a quick fiddle before breakfast. Oo-er.
